Use Drop Caps

Description

Drop Caps are large initial capital letters displayed at the beginning of a paragraph in Microsoft Word.  Use can use Drop Caps to add a special touch to your document that helps your readers' eyes find their way through the document page.

This lesson will show you how to use Microsoft Word's Drop Cap command.  You will also learn how to add a more intricate Drop Cap using ClipArt.

In Microsoft Word

  • Click anywhere in a paragraph that you wish to begin with a Dropped Capital letter

  • Menu Path

    • Click on the Format menu

    • Click the Drop Cap command

  • Position

    • Click to select either Dropped or In Margin

  • Options

    • Font - will automatically match the font being used in the paragraph

    • Lines to Drop - default is 3 lines

    • Distance from Text - default is 0"

  • Click the OK button

To Add a More Intricate Drop Cap using ClipArt

  • Go to Microsoft's web site, then to the Design Gallery Live

  • Design Gallery Live Web Site

    • In the Search For:  text box,

      • Type the letter you want to use as a Drop Cap

      • Click the GO button

    • Browse through the designs and download your favorite

In Microsoft Word

  • Place the insertion point at the beginning of a paragraph

  • Click on the Insert menu, Picture command and the ClipArt sub-command

  • ClipArt Gallery

    • Insert the ClipArt design you just downloaded

  • Format the Picture

    • Resize the ClipArt, if necessary

    • Set the Text Wrapping Style

      • Format menu, Picture command

      • Click the Layout tab of the Format Picture Dialog Box

      • Select Square wrapping style, with Left horizontal alignment
