Delete a File While in an Office Program

Description

You can quickly delete a file while you are working in any Microsoft Office program.  You don't need to go to My Computer or Windows Explorer in order to delete files.  

Follow the steps listed below to delete a file while working in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access or any other Windows based program.

Menu Bar

  • Click on the File menu

  • Select the Open command

    • NOTE:  you can also delete files while using the Save As command

Open Dialog Box

  • Single click to select a file that you want to delete

    • To select multiple files that are next to each other

      • Click to select the first file

      • Then depress <Shift> while clicking the last file

    • To select multiple files that are not next to each other

      • Click to select the first file

      • Then depress <Ctrl> while clicking each additional file

  • Position your mouse over any selected file

  • Then click your right mouse button

    • A shortcut menu will appear

Shortcut Menu

  • From the shortcut menu, select the Delete command

    • Your deleted files will be sent to the Windows Recycle Bin
