Microsoft Excel
Remove Merge from Cells

Description

Microsoft Excel allows you to merge and center selected cells using the Merge and Center button on the Formatting toolbar.  This feature is normally used on worksheet headings.

While merging looks great, you may later want to remove the merge.   Clicking the Merge and Center button does not remove the merge.  However, you can easily remove the merge text option by following the steps listed below.

In a Microsoft Excel Worksheet

  • Single click to select the cells that contain the merged and centered text

  • Menu Path

    • Click on the Format menu

    • Select the Cells command

Format Cells Dialog Box

  • Click on the Alignment tab

  • Click to turn off the Merge cells text control option

    • When turned off, no check mark will appear in the Merge cells option box

  • Click the OK button to close the dialog box

    • NOTE:  the cells will still be centered, so you may want to change the alignment to Left Align
