Lock Rows and Columns

Description

You can keep rows or columns in sight when scrolling through areas of a large worksheet.  Use the following steps to easily freeze the rows and columns you wish to remain visible while scrolling.

Place of the Active Cell

  • To lock rows, place the active cell in the row below the one you want to freeze

    • For example, to always view rows 1 through 4, place the active cell anywhere in row 5

  • To lock columns, place the active cell in the column to the right of the one you want to freeze

    • For example, to always view column A, place the active cell anywhere in column B

  • To lock both rows and columns, place the active cell below and to the right of the area you want to freeze

    • For example, to always view rows 1 through 4 and column A, place the active cell in B5

Menu Path

  • Click the Windows menu

  • Click the Freeze Panes command

    • In the example shown below, when you scroll through the worksheet, rows 1:4 and column A will always be visible
