Use Conditional Formatting

Description

In Excel 2007 you can highlight interesting cells, emphasize unusual values, and visualize data using color scales, data bars, or icons sets.  You can apply these formats with just a click from galleries of preset options, or you can customize your own conditional formatting rules.  Follow the steps below to change your numbers in an Excel 2007 worksheet to a visualization option.

Select Cells of Data

  • Select a range of cells that contain numbers.  For example, select the net price in a sales worksheet

  • or, make sure that the active cell is in a table of data

Excel Path

  • Click on the Home tab

  • In the Styles group, click the arrow next to Conditional Formatting

  • Point to Data Bars, Color Scales, or Icon Sets

    • As you hover over the gallery choices, your selected data will preview that choice

  • Click to select the Conditional Format that you wish to apply

  • HINT:  click the Manage Rules command to edit the existing conditional formatting rules
