Microsoft Excel
Add Pictures to Charts

Description

When creating charts you can make them more interesting and fun to view by using pictures instead of bars or columns.  Microsoft Excel includes tools that make it easy to replace bars or columns with ClipArt images or other graphic images such as photos.

In Microsoft Excel

  • Create a standard or 3-D bar or create a standard or 3-D column chart

  • In the chart, Single click to select a bar or column

Menu Path

  • Click on the Format menu

  • Click the Selected Data Series command

  • Click on the Patterns tab

  • Click the Fill Effects button

  • Click on the Picture tab

  • Click the Select Picture button

  • Move to the folder containing the picture you want, single click to select the picture, then click the Insert button

  • Select an option under Format for image scaling; for best results select either:

    • Stack

    • Stack and Scale To:  units/picture

  • Click the OK button

    • You will return to the Format Data Series dialog box

  • Click on the OK button

    • Don't worry if the image looks squished in the dialog box; it will be sized correctly in the chart

  • If the width of the chart's bars or columns are too small, then go back to the Format Data Series dialog box

    • Click on the Options tab

    • Decrease the Gap Width to make the bars or columns wider

    • If necessary, increase the Overlap to widen the bars or columns
