Microsoft Excel
Formula to Quickly Calculate Age

Description

Have you ever needed your Microsoft Excel worksheet to calculate a person's age?  The DATEDIF function will quickly calculate the age as of the current date.  You can have the function display the age in years, months or days.

Try the following in a blank worksheet:

Microsoft Excel Worksheet

  • In cell A1, type your birth date

    • NOTE:  I recommend that you enter the year using 4 digits; otherwise Excel will assume that the years 29 and less are in the 2000s.  For example, if you enter 6/21/29 Excel will read the date as 6/21/2029.  Enter 6/21/1926 if you want the year to be 1926.

  • In cell B1, type =DATEDIF(A1,TODAY(),"y") and then press <Enter>

  • Formula Arguments

    • A1 is the location of the cell that contains the date

    • TODAY() tells Excel to calculate the age as of the current date

    • "y" will calculate the age in years

      • Use "m" to calculate the age in months

      • Use "d" to calculate the age in days

  • Formula Format

    • Commas are used to separate the three parts of the formula

    • Quotes must surround the y, m, or d
